"Eleanor" Elly Barber—never call her Eleanor—was born into a household built on discipline, duty, and deep love. Her mother retired as a Navy Captain. Her father was a Master Chief. Her father would joke with her that like her mother, she would outrank him and do it faster than either one of them did.
Elly was thirteen when she rebuilt a broken oil-heated water heater while her parents were deployed—because someone had to. Her parents weren’t too happy with her but still pretty proud of course.
Elly’s dreams weren’t welcomed with open arms. Her parents hoped she’d use her mind in safer ways. Her instructors wanted her in medical school. But Elly knew her path. She wanted to build. She wanted to fly. And when she sat in an F/A-18 during a Navy ROTC training trip in Pensacola, she knew she'd found her calling. She later became one of the Navy’s most respected pilots—gritty, unshakable, exacting.
